Varsity Team Wins 2009 AAU Football
National Championship
The 2009 AAU Football National Championship
Tournament was held during the first weekend of
December in central Florida. After three
grueling games in torrential rains, the Jaguars
qualified for the semi-final round and
eventually brought the National Championship
back to Houston and the YFL.
On Friday, 12/4, the Jags jumped all over the
Florida Bandits 22-0, but then ran into a "team
of giants" from Maryland and lost 0-14. However,
on Saturday, 12/5, the team took out the San
Luis Rey Trojans (California) by a score of 14-0
to reach the semi-final round. On Saturday
evening, the Jags defeated the top-seeded and
oversized Manassas Hokies (Virginia) by a score
of 22-0 to make it to the championship game.
The Championship game was held on Sunday, 12/5.
The Jaguars had to face the "team of giants",
the Takoma Park Rams from Maryland who had
already downed the Jags during pool play. The
Rams came into the game with a lot of confidence
and took an early 1st quarter lead of 14-0. The
rest of the 1st half saw the Jaguars tighten up
defensively, and methodically move the ball down
the field to end the half down 14-7. At the
start of the 3rd quarter, the Jaguars continued
their drive for the title by tying the game
14-14, and eventually took the lead 21-14 to
shock the Rams. The Rams scored in the 4th
quarter to tie the game at 21-21, but the Jags
sustained a long drive and ate up clock and
scored from the 1-yard line with 40 seconds
left. The Jaguars defense then held the Rams and
created a turnover that allowed the Jags to take
a knee to end the game and crush the hopes of
the might Rams and bring the national
championship to the YFL by a score of 27-21.
